Turkish calligrapher "Reciter Mehmet Fahmy Effendi", may God have mercy on him
Muhammad Fahmi Effendi was born in Istanbul in 1276 AH. He memorized the Qur’an and learned the readings, as well as the third and transcription by the calligrapher Shawqi Effendi. Some of them mention in the book (The Late Calligraphers) that Fahmi was brought up by Shafiq Bey and this is a mistake, as Fahmi Effendi himself indicated in some of his paintings His calligraphy is that he is a student of Shoghi Effendi, and it is noted from the plate kept in the Istanbul University Library under the number "42811".
In addition to his beautiful recitation of the Holy Qur’an, Fahmi Effendi was working at the time in the “Correcting and Proofreading Board of the Qur’an,” which was affiliated with the Department of the Islamic sheikhdom and supervised the integrity of the printed Qur’an and ensured its authenticity.
In the large ornaments that Fahmi Effendi wrote, he used to decorate them with dusty calligraphy and wonderful forms of Quranic verses. There is a rare ornament of this kind preserved in the Saray Topkapi Museum. Fahmi Effendi was influenced in his lines - especially the clear third - in Nazif Bey's way. Fahmi Effendi, "may God have mercy on him", was a virtuous person. He lived his life in poverty, until he died on the 20th of Rabi' al-Awwal 1333 AH, and was buried in the Majeqa cemetery in Istanbul.
